Years ago, I made a set of lighting icons in Illustrator to communicate my lighting overheads to the crew. I never intended them to be anything more than tools to organize my own thoughts and express ideas to my crew. They have since been added to and revised dozens of times, and are now used by my friends and fellow cinematographers around the world.

When I first made the original icons, there were few options available for generating professional looking lighting plots. But now, there are a plethora of other options available out there, from iPad apps to desktop 3D applications. I encourage you to use them all and find the best tool for you. Sometimes I still use a good old napkin.
